Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had a conference call today with the President of the European Council Charles Michel, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, António Costa, Prime Minister of Portugal, which holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, as part of the preparation for the European Council that will take place on February 25 and 26.
The main topic was tackling the pandemic and the coordination between EU member states, in light of the latest developments related to public health and vaccine availability.
The Prime Minister reiterated to his interlocutors his proposal for the establishment of a European vaccination certificate that will facilitate safe travel, once epidemiological developments allow the loosening of mobility restrictions.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis also reaffirmed the importance of the rapid authorization of new vaccines by the competent EU agencies, always in compliance with safety protocols but without bureaucratic impediments.
The leaders also exchanged views, on a preparatory level, on the issue of Turkey, in view of the European Council meeting that will take place on 25 and 26 March.
