Statements by the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his Highness Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, at the beginning of their meeting, at Maximos Mansion

(Dimitris Papamitsos / Greek Prime Minister's Office)

Kyriakos Mitsotakis: Well Your Highness, it’s a real pleasure to be able to welcome you to Athens on your first European trip after Covid. It is an opportunity to reaffirm the strength of our strategic relationship. We will be signing important agreements and we will have an opportunity to further discuss regional developments. But how to further cement this important relationship between our two countries, placing a particular emphasis on economic cooperation.

I would like to congratulate you again for your “Vision 2030” project, its ambition and we would like to explore further opportunities between our two countries and our two economies to partner and to attract more Saudi investment into Greece.

So it’s a great pleasure to be able to welcome you to Athens and to the Prime Minister’s office.

Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud: Thank you Mr. President. I’m very glad to be in Greece and really thankful of the warm welcome, which means a lot to me and to Saudi Arabia.

The relation between both countries is a historical relation and I believe we have also historical opportunities that we’re going to finalize a lot of it today, linking the grid of electricity which we can provide Greece and Southwest Europe through Greece with much cheaper renewable energy. And we are going to sign a MoU about that today.

Also we are working about hydrogen and how to turn Greece as a hub for Europe to hydrogen. That’s a game changer for both of us. Also we are working in linking the telecommunication grid.

All of these three items, it’s big items that are going to change the position of Greece and Saudi Arabia and are going to support Europe, especially South and West Europe, with much cheaper energy and more efficient energy coming from renewable energy. And also we have a fourth big item which we can announce today. We can announce it later on.

We are working on it and definitely we have a lot of agenda: investment, trade, economic agenda, political agenda, security. So I promise you that when I come to Greece, I will not come empty- handed. We have a lot of stuff that’s going to be game changer for both countries and also for the whole region. Thank you Mr. President.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis: Thank you. Thank you, your Highness.
