With sorrow and respect, the global community bids farewell to Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch in the history of the United Kingdom. Such losses are usually accompanied by the conclusion that with them an entire era ends. Yet, in the case of Elizabeth, many eras end (with this loss).
Never before has a head of state witnessed, during their term, their country and the entire world change so much and so fast. Because the Queen ascended to the throne while the British empire was still spreading to the ends of the earth. She now passes away in an era when the United Kingdom is entering an unprecedented, very different phase of its turbulent history.
During Her Majesty’s reign, the British state and the society have come across many undulations. The Queen has harmoniously cooperated with 15 Prime Ministers, among them personalities that have left a huge imprint in the international scene. And she always walked this path in modesty and prudence. Remaining loyal to the centuries-old constitutional roots of her country.
In times when the world counts ever fewer monarchies, Elizabeth managed to infuse a new breath to the institution interlacing tradition with renewal. She made the institution more accessible to the people, as is certified by the reactions of the British people themselves. Because the Queen served what her position symbolized: the unity of its people. And this is her most precious legacy.
We respectfully join the sorrow of the citizens of the United Kingdom. And we offer our warm condolences to the Royal Family.
