Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had a telephone conversation a short while ago with the President of Egypt Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
During their telephone conversation, they discussed developments concerning the Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine of Sinai, following the recent decision of the Egyptian judiciary.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of preserving the pilgrimage and Greek Orthodox character of the Monastery and resolving the issue in an institutional manner.
The two leaders agreed that the solution lies in the already recorded common understanding of the two sides, as well as in what had been agreed privately and announced publicly during Mr. Sisi’s visit to Athens on May 7.
They also agreed that, in this context, a Greek delegation would travel to Egypt on Monday, June 2, to further discuss the agreement with a view to its swift completion.
