Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ Doorstep Statement upon his arrival at the Informal European Council meeting in Copenhagen

We will have the opportunity to discuss crucial issues concerning the geostrategic security of the European continent. The ongoing war in Ukraine and the broader global geopolitical turmoil create, I would say, a sense of urgency regarding the need for Europe to finally move from words to action in terms of its unified European defense.

Greece is one of those countries that for many years have maintained their defense spending at a level well above the European average, and we will continue to do so, allocating more than 3% of GDP to our defense spending for the coming years.

However, the time has come for Europe to mobilize European resources to support European projects for common European defense, such as, for example, missile defense or this defense wall against drone intrusion, which is one of the projects proposed by the European Commission that we will be discussing today.

What I want to stress is that any common European defense project concerning Europe cannot be limited only to the eastern borders of the continent. It must consider the security of Europe as a whole. Obviously, the southeastern borders must be protected, but so must the southern borders of Europe, so that our continent is shielded against any possible future threat.
