Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met in the morning with his Singaporean counterpart, Lawrence Wong, and was received by President Tharman Shanmugaratnam at the Istana government complex in Singapore.
During the meeting with Mr. Wong, the broad prospects for strengthening bilateral cooperation in a wide range of areas were discussed, such as tourism, shipping, defense, and Greek exports, including agri-food products, while the prospect of investment in Greece was discussed more broadly.
The two Prime Ministers also discussed cooperation and the exchange of expertise on digital governance issues and the application of artificial intelligence in public administration.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis referred to the continuation and consolidation of reforms, while emphasizing Greece’s dual role as an energy hub for the broader region of southeastern Europe and as a provider of energy security in central and eastern Europe. In this context, the Prime Minister referred to the recent agreement to supply Ukraine with American LNG during President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Athens.
The two leaders also discussed common positions of the two countries, such as belief in the application of international law and the law of the sea, in the multilateral international system and in free trade.
The Prime Minister expressed his support for strengthening relations between the EU and Singapore, which, as a member of ASEAN, plays an important role in the rapidly developing region of southeast Asia.
At the start of their meeting, the Prime Minister and his counterpart from Singapore had the following dialogue:
Kyriakos Mitsotakis: It’s a real pleasure to be here, it has been a long time since a Greek Prime Minister has been to Singapore. We share a lot in common. Both maritime nations, both nations very much concerned with preserving a rules-based international order. For us, it’s very interesting to also explain to an Asian audience what has happened in Greece over the past years. We are beginning to attract investment also from Singapore. We would certainly like to see these flows continue and strengthen. So it’s a great opportunity to be here.
Lawrence Wong: And the economy has been doing well under your leadership, we’ve seen it continue to take off. And we see many new opportunities in Greece and also in Europe, because of the FTA, because of all the various agreements between EU and Singapore, which we already have in place. Through that we are able to see some economic engagements, which we want to encourage.
The Prime Minister was then received by the President of Singapore, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, with whom he exchanged views on issues of mutual interest.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis also met with Metropolitan Konstantinos of Singapore and South Asia and representatives of the Greek community.
