Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ visit to Madrid

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited Madrid, where he met with the Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sánchez and was received by King Felipe VI of Spain.

During his meeting with the Prime Minister of Spain, the mutual desire to strengthen bilateral relations was confirmed, with an emphasis on the economy and defense, as well as to strengthen cooperation on issues of mutual European interest, focusing on the next Multiannual Financial Framework.

Specifically, they discussed coordination between Greece and Spain on issues regarding support for Cohesion Policy and the Common Agricultural Policy, as well as the implementation of the recommendations of the Draghi report.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis stressed the need for joint European investments in areas of common interest with joint European funding on the basis of the Draghi and Letta reports, placing emphasis on the defense sector and joint defense projects, such as a European air defense shield.

The two leaders agreed on the need to strengthen European collective security and explore prospects for Greek-Spanish cooperation in the field of defense.

Issues and initiatives of both countries concerning the protection of minors on the internet were also discussed.

The two leaders exchanged views on international and regional developments, emphasizing the situation in Ukraine, the Middle East, and the implementation of the second phase of the 20-point peace plan for Gaza, as well as the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The Prime Minister was then received by King Felipe VI of Spain at the Zarzuela Royal Palace.
