Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ meeting with a delegation from the United States Congress led by Senator Jerry Moran

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met today at Maximos Mansion with a delegation from the United States Congress led by Senator Jerry Moran.

During the meeting, the excellent level of Greek-American relations was confirmed, while cooperation in a number of areas was discussed, with an emphasis on energy, defense, and investment.

The Prime Minister stressed Greece’s role as a pillar of stability and security in the wider region, as well as a provider of energy security for the whole of Southeast Europe through the Vertical Corridor.

International and regional developments were also discussed, focusing on the latest developments in Ukraine and the Middle East.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Prime Minister and Senator Jerry Moran had the following dialogue:

Kyriakos Mitsotakis: Well, Senators, welcome. It’s always a pleasure to be able to host a congressional delegation to Greece, especially when you bring us beautiful weather. And I think you come at a very interesting time, as I’m sure you’ve been briefed by the Ambassador. I do believe that U.S.-Greek relations are at an all-time high.

And I also took note of the statement that was issued by President Trump upon welcoming our new Ambassador to Washington. And the President highlights various aspects of our cooperation ranging from defence and security to energy and artificial intelligence.

So I think it will be an opportunity to have a discussion on the depth of this relationship, which has traditionally had bipartisan support, and to identify new areas of cooperation.

We’re particularly excited about the energy aspect of our cooperation. There’s going to be a big meeting in Washington next week regarding the Vertical Corridor. As you know, Greece’s infrastructure is instrumental in terms of supplying our northern neighbours, including Ukraine, with natural gas, preferably US LNG.

And we’re looking to build upon this partnership to do much more also in other areas, including investments by the big hyperscalers in technology infrastructure in Greece, which is a topic I also discussed with many American companies. I just came back from India from the AI summit and there’s a lot of interest to invest also in AI infrastructure, which of course also connects to the energy story. So I’ll stop here. Welcome again.

Jerry Moran: Prime Minister, thank you very much. Thank you for hosting this congressional delegation. We’re joined by the Ambassador. She has been a great host in our time here in Greece and has given us a full report of the growing and important relationship between Greece and the United States.

We know from our own work the value of the US friendship with Greece, the capabilities for us to work together seem to me to be endless, but we are so far along in making that endless trail. We’ve gone a long way in that regard, and we’re appreciative of the relationship we have in national security and economics.

So excited about the opportunities for energy, United States and Greece cooperating, just a bright future, and love to be back in Greece to congratulate you on such success in your leadership, and particularly in the solid nature of Greece and its role in the world, its role in NATO.

It is a real privilege for us to be here. I’m joined by five of my colleagues. We generally have a national security and economic background and committee assignments. I am the co-lead on this bipartisan group, and the co-lead is Kirsten Gillibrand of New York. We have the second ranking Republican, Senator Barrasso, I’m joined by Senator Fischer and Senator Boozman, and we are here to continue that relationship that is strong and important to the United States and to Greece. Thank you.

The meeting was attended, on the American side, by Senators Kirsten Gillibrand, John Barrasso, John Boozman, Deb Fischer, Gary Peters, and US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle.

The Greek government was represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs George Gerapetritis, the Director of the Prime Minister’s Diplomatic Office, Ambassador Ekaterini Nassika, the Director of the Prime Minister’s Office for International Strategic Planning and Communication Aristotelia Peloni, and the Secretary General for National Security, Thanos Dokos.
