Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ participation in a video conference of European leaders on the protection of minors online

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis participated today in a video conference on the protection of minors online and the adoption of an EU-wide age limit for social media access, which was convened at the initiative of French President Emmanuel Macron.

During the video conference, which was attended by representatives from 14 European Union member states and the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, the Prime Minister briefed on Greece’s decision to soon enact legislation banning minors under the age of 15 from accessing social media, a measure that will take effect on January 1, 2027.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis stressed the need for a European age verification mechanism, as well as a European digital age of majority, so that national initiatives are fully harmonized with EU legislation.
